James Bohan, CPA, MRED

Founder

James Bohan is a multi-faceted real estate professional, CPA, and entrepreneur. As the founder of Stonehan, he manages over $20MM of real estate while also providing accounting, tax, and fractional CFO solutions to real estate businesses, funds & syndicators . With more than 15 years’ of experience, he brings a wealth of knowledge in analyzing real estate transactions, tax structuring, creative financing techniques, and working capital management. Within the real estate investment management industry, Mr. Bohan is well regarded for his deep understanding of the complexities involved with a multitude of investment assets and complicated organizational structures.

Prior to Stonehan, James served as the inaugural employee and Chief Financial Officer of a Los Angeles-based real estate investment management firm, Mosaic Real Estate Investors. There, he played a key role in the firm’s growth and aligned the team through collaboration of management and stakeholders regarding strategic and financial planning, underwriting of debt and preferred equity investments, investor relations and reporting, risk management, compliance, cash flow, treasury, operating plans, tax matters, accounting, staffing, and policy development. Through his tenure with the company he oversaw all financial matters for the firm’s first ~$1B in loan commitments and the investor base grow to over 1,400 HNW investors and institutions.

Before joining Mosaic, James began his accounting career with the prestigious firm, Rothstein Kass, which was considered the premier boutique accounting firm for alternative investment vehicles: hedge fund, private equity, and venture capital firms. He worked there from 2010 until 2015 and during this time Rothstein was acquired by KPMG. James became an expert in real estate tax matters while offering tax and wealth management counsel to partnerships, trusts, REITs, corporations, and high-net-worth clients. He serviced private equity real estate firms with collective assets under management over $10B and consulted on over $2B of real estate transactions.

During this time from 2010 – 2015, James earned his California CPA license and was admitted to the Dollinger Master of Real Estate Development program at USC’s Sol Price School of Public Policy. He earned his Master’s in Real Estate Development (MRED) in 2015, graduating in the top 5% of his class and achieving an honorable mention for outstanding performance on the final comprehensive examination, all while continuing to work part-time for KPMG. He focused his undergraduate studies in Real Estate Finance and International Business, earning bachelor’s degrees in both Accounting and Business Administration from USC. His undergraduate academic achievements at USC included being accepted into the Marshall School of Business Honors Program and earning a spot on the Dean’s List. His collegiate social life centered around the Delta Chi Fraternity where he was elected to become a member of the executive committee. His summers were spent learning the nuances of real estate while serving internships in a variety of settings: residential mortgage lending, home building, and both corporate and onsite property management.

Mr. Bohan stays active professionally with involvement in the NIBCA, Information Management Network, and various other trade organizations. An avid traveler, he has visited over 40 countries, spent a semester studying abroad at Thammasat University in Thailand, and possesses dual citizenship in the United States of America and the Republic of Ireland.

Michele Cyr Mulkey, CPA, SHRM-SCP, SPHR
Chief Operating Officer

Michele Cyr Mulkey joined Stonehan as Chief Operating Officer, bringing more than 30 years of leadership at the intersection of finance and people operations. She specializes in building the internal infrastructure that allows growing firms to scale without sacrificing the quality of client service, while providing opportunities for the continued professional growth of its team members.

Prior to Stonehan, Michele served as COO of one of the nation's largest tax relief firms, where she architected end-to-end operations that helped the firm earn seven "Best Places to Work" awards and the BBB International Torch Award for Ethics. Her career also includes leading roles as Director of Human Resources, Chief Financial Officer, and COO across wholesale and retail, manufacturing, construction, and academic/institutional settings.

At Stonehan, Michele is focused on streamlining internal processes, developing the firm's team through leadership coaching and structured growth frameworks, and implementing systems that strengthen reporting transparency and speed—ensuring the firm's operational backbone matches the rigor of the tax and accounting strategies it delivers to high-net-worth investors and fund managers.

Michele holds a Master of Arts in Human Resources Administration from Central Michigan University and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting & Business/Finance from Mount Saint Mary's University. She is a Certified Public Accountant and holds SPHR and SHRM-SCP certifications in human resources.

Based out of Stonehan's headquarters at "The Innovation Den" in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Michele lives by a simple philosophy: intentional preparation, calm execution, and unwavering loyalty to the team's goals.

Outside the Office

When she's not architecting operational systems or mentoring team members, Michele can be found on her bike, logging miles around Coeur d'Alene, or keeping her endurance sharp with spinning classes. She's an avid house plant gardener and enjoys baking, especially when it means having friends over for a home-cooked meal.

Crystal Kim, CPA, MST

Managing Tax Director

Crystal Kim is the Managing Tax Director at Stonehan Accountancy, P.C., where she leads the firm’s Real Estate, and Pass-through Tax Practices. Bringing 17 years of dedicated expertise in complex Subchapter K partnership taxation, Crystal delivers high-impact tax advisory, compliance, and structural planning to real estate funds, private equity vehicles, and pass-through entities. 

Crystal has developed a sophisticated understanding of flow-through entities, honed by advising institutional clients and managing complex, multi-tiered partnership structures across both public and private sectors. Crystal began her professional trajectory in public accounting at Rothstein Kass (now KPMG), where she built a strong foundational expertise in alternative investment tax compliance, managing full-cycle federal and state tax reporting for hedge funds, venture capital, private equity vehicles, and asset management firms. She then advanced to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), serving institutional funds with $20 plus billion in AUM. In this role, she collaborated closely with clients on intricate partnership allocations, specialized targeted capital accounts, distribution waterfall, and cross-border tax issues. 

Transitioning to in-house technical leadership, Crystal spent years navigating unique and highly specialized partnership environments. At OneTrust, a private equity-backed technology unicorn, she managed transactional and operational complexities, formulating partner capital account maintenance, distribution waterfalls, tracking multi-layer 704(c) disparities, and Section 704(b) revaluations, alongside overseeing the tax mechanics for M&A activities and executive equity compensation. Her public company expertise was further cemented at Station Casinos, hotel and casino resorts, where she directed tax strategies for a publicly traded umbrella partnership (Up-C) structure. There, she was responsible for partnership and corporate tax compliance, SEC 10-Q and annual 10-K tax disclosures, heavy fixed asset management system across 15 properties, and sophisticated Section 1031 exchange strategies.

Her broad-spectrum mastery of flow-through taxation also includes managing specialized energy sector tax mechanics and generation of over tens of thousands of individual K-1s each tax year for Breitburn Energy, a publicly traded Master Limited Partnership (MLP). Additionally, she managed the tax matters for the family office of billionaire David Murdock.

This rare combination of institutional Big Four advisory and hands-on corporate leadership gives Crystal unparalleled technical mastery of partnership taxation, allowing her to seamlessly bridge the gap between fund-level compliance and operating-entity strategy.

Crystal earned her Master of Science in Taxation from Golden Gate University and her Bachelor of Science in Finance from California State University, Los Angeles. She is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in CA and NV. Active in her community, Crystal is a deacon at her local church serving as the secretary of the woman’s missionary group and managing the church’s accounting and finance. She is also a member of the choir.

John Hawley

Director of Fund Accounting

John Hawley is Director of Fund Accounting at Stonehan, where he oversees bookkeeping and accounting for the firm's real estate investment fund clients.

Previously at PwC, John audited funds for Fortune 500 financial institutions across banking, capital markets, and real estate under both GAAP and IFRS. There, he also supported bookkeeping and financial reporting for a private equity-backed portfolio company in the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services industry.

Earlier in his career, John held audit roles at RSM, covering biotech and tech manufacturing clients, and at CohnReznick, where he audited government contracts.

John holds a degree in Accountancy from California State University, Northridge. Outside of work, he enjoys fishing and the outdoors with his wife and two young children.
